Gonzo's Quest: Yet to be beaten

No Deposit Gonzo's Quest

New games are constantly added at Mayfair Casino London, but this week we’re particularly pleased to see Gonzo’s Quest taking pride of place on their homepage.

Why? Simple: It’s one of our favourite slots of all time and has yet to be improved upon despite the glut of 3d, compered slots that are now available from other software developers.

Gonzo really looks as though it was developed by Betsoft or Sherriff, the leading experts in 3d slot design - yet it’s actually from NetEnt.

Whilst Net are no slouches when it comes to great ideas for slots that are exceptionally well-executed – check out last year’s Eggomatic for a great example – they don’t usually push the boat out quite as far they did with Gonzo, and as such he’s still their best ever slot and the inspiration behind every state-of-the-art 3d game that’s followed. Without it, we wouldn’t have slots like Mr Vegas, or A Night in Paris – or any of the other high concept slots that feature a central character standing next to the reels, gesticulating and muttering for your entertainment as the game progresses.

Gonzo is short for Francisco Gonzalez, arguably the most famous of the Spanish conquistadors who travelled to South America hundreds of year ago and – to put it politely – exerted his influence on the indigenous Inca culture. He stands by the reels, staring at his map, convincingly grumbling and shuffling around whilst you play, occasionally taking his hat off to catch gold coins for you – though the key masterstroke here is being able to pull off the exotic jungle tribe/lost city theme whilst keeping it totally fresh by looking at it from a totally different angle, albeit through the eyes of a man who nowadays would be called a thief, plunderer and probably much worse.

The main feature of the game, however, is that it uses falling blocks rather than spinning reels. This had only previously been done on IGT’s Da Vinci Diamonds, and we’re sure IGT would be the first to admit that Gonzo looks far more impressive. The Mayan-style blocks are tastefully designed, and once you get a winning row it crumble to dust, allowing the blocks above to fall into its place.
