About Book of Ra

Novomatic’s Book of Ra is their most famous slot. It’s up against some pretty stiff competition from games like Reel King, Power Stars and Lucky Lady’s Charm, but thanks to impeccable theming and a killer central feature it manages to retain its position as Novomatic’s Number One slot and one of the very biggest slots on the planet.
In fact, this game is so popular that its designers have given it a sequel and even used it as the basis for a live feature roulette game. The Book of Ra Deluxe doesn’t differ wildly from the original, as the prevailing thinking at Novomatic was ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ – and that’s sentiment we concur with 100%, though the deluxe version looks a little more up to date if you fancy something slightly more refined and don’t miss the character of the original game.

Play alongside Indiana Jones (well almost…)

As well as offering great gameplay, Book of Ra is also worth noting for its cultural significance. All slot developers like to offer a game themed around Ancient Egypt – it’s the most popular slot theme ever developed, and offers a taste of exotic mystery that few other themed can compete with.

Themes, though, do need to be constantly updated and the logical step forward with Egypt was to introduce an extra element of contemporary action and adventure – and who better to do that than Indiana Jones?

Sadly, no-one has acquired the right to use Indy and clips/images from the much-loved series of films, so a new hero – Daring Dave – was brought in by Novomatic, and he’s the central character in Book of Ra. The game manages to establish Dave as a hero in his own right and mixes just the right amount of intrigue and action to bring you both a thrilling and visually stunning experience every time you play.

Game Features

The key to this game’s success is its central expanding symbol. Before the free spins round starts the eponymous Book or Ra will appear, flicking through the pages until it stops to reveal your feature symbol. This can expand in a variety of way, taking up three positions on the reels to yield easy wins during free spins, all of which come with a double multiplier.

The top prize is obtained by landing five images of Daring Dave on one of the 9 paylines. At the typical maximum bet per line of £50 you get a £250,000 jackpot, though during free spins it’s doubled to £500,000.

In common with most Novomatic slots, any line wins you make are offered with the option to take a gamble. You can double your winnings by correctly guessing whether the turn of a car will be red or black, and Novomatic give you a fighting chance by showing the last six outcomes so you can make a better prediction.

RTP %

There’s an RTP of 94.2% on this game, and it has a high variance – which is another reason why players like it so much. You’ll usually have to wait a while for the free spins round but once it kicks in the rewards can be astronomical.
