New Slot Machines 2017

It’s a great time to be a slots player. Every day, there are new titles being released from some of the world’s brightest developers. Graphics continue to sharpen, features get ever more impressive and the wins just keep on growing - new slots are truly a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, not all of these games are great, some are just downright average Which is why we spend hours finding you the very best new games to try.

Once you've decided that you want to play one of the new games, how do you decide where to play? We help you choose the right casino, one that uses fair gaming software, and has a good reputation in the industry.

You'll find the latest titles from globally recognised developers like Microgaming, Playtech, Ash Gaming, WagerWorks, Sheriff Gaming, Net Entertainment and more.

Can I play these new slots for free?

Of course! There's actually several ways to try any of these games for free. Most of our partner sites will have a list of free play games on their websites; simply head over to the games lobby and hover over one of the games - you should find a practice play or try for free button. Simply click that and the slot will launch as if you were really playing it... you will even have your own demo balance!

Now if you were after some real money prizes, then this isn't really a good option - so instead you could try and take a casinos no deposit free spin offer. All you have to do is sign up and in seconds you will have free spins in your account to play.

Granted - it's highly likely that these funds won't necessarily be on the game you want to play - but you can use the winnings from the free spins to have a spin on the game of your choice.

If you do decide to play with bonus cash, remember that wagering requirements will need to be fulfilled before the amount becomes withdrawable.

The history of slot machines

Charles Fey is widely regarded as the inventor of slot machines. Sometime between 1887 and 1895 he developed a machine with three spinning reels that had five different symbols in total: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a bell (a so called 'Liberty Bell' in the US).

The machine got its namn after the bell, and thus it came that the first slots machine was called Liberty Bell. It became an almost immediate success and kickstarted the development of an entirely new industry: gambling machines.

Not even when gambling machines were forbidden in Charles Feys' state did his production capacity manage to meet the demand of his machine, so high was the degree of popularity it enjoyed.

Major game developers

It took many years for the slot machines to become fully virtual, as the ones we can see online. After the mechanical version came a hybrid: a landbased electronic slot machine. These are what we nowadays consider 'classic' slot machines, but in all honesty the real classics are the mechanical ones.

Most of today's slot game developers focus wholeheartedly on producing online slot games, but there are a few of the top names in the industry that have actually survived all the way from the time of the landbased electronic slot machines, and pinball games. Novomatic is such a company.

NetEnt

Originally founded as Net Entertainment, the Swedish game developer is nowadays known as NetEnt. It is a fairly old company in the business, having been around since 1996. NetEnt have made a huge impact upon the development of games by constantly raising the bar for graphics, sound, gameplay creativity and by expanding to new platforms - namely mobile devices - by launching the NetEnt Touch series.

The first game in this series is probably also the most famous: Gonzo's Quest. It's an incredibly popular game loosely based upon the story of Gonzalo Pizarro, one of Spain's most famous conquistadors. What was unique about Gonzo when heh first entered the scene was that he was looking for winning combinations on falling blocks, instead of spinning reels. Up until now, even the virtual slots had been so heavily influenced by the mechanical ones that they all had spinning reels. Removing this element, and still presenting something clearly identifiable as a slot machine, was the true ingenuity behind the NetEnt developers success with Gonzo.

Other big games stemming from this developer are Starburst, Jack and the Beanstalk (a game that took the concept of wild symbols and made them about 10 times cooler), Dazzle Me, and their very latest creation: Butterfly Staxx, a 5-reel and 40-row slot set in a breath-taking kaleidoscope of colour that will make your mind travel to James Cameron's blockbuster movie Avatar.

Microgaming

In our view, Microgaming can not be credited enough for having created the world's best poker network, formerly know as Proma Poker or the Microgaming Poker network (MPN). The excellent software allows gamblers to play poker games like Texas hold 'em and five and seven card stud poker against other players instead of computer opponents.

But Microgaming is equally well-respected for their slot games, and especially the Progressive Jackpot Slots they develop. By pooling a small percentage of all bets from all spins made on every casino that offer the title to its members, extremely large jackpot sums can be built up. And, of course, won.

In October 2015, the slot paid out the staggering amount of £13,209,300 to the UK customer of Betway, Jonathan Heywood. He won it by a well-placed spin on Mega Moolah, and still to this date, that's the largest online slot win ever.

Novomatic

The foundation to the game developing company Novomatic was laid back in 1974 when Johan Graf and Gerhard Brodnik joined forces to start importing pinball machines from Belgium to their home country, Austria. These were placed in pubs, restaurants, taverns, bars, cafés, brothels, and all or places where they thought people might be interested in playing.

Business soon boomed for the duo and the technical development allowed electronical slot machines to take the pinball machines' place and popularity. Four years after their start, the company was founded: Novomatic Automatenhandels GmbH.

Even to this day, the Novomatic Group continue to develop games that will throw you back in time. When you play their top title, Book of Ra, you will forget that you hold an iPad in your hands and experience the same feeling Novomatic's first customers. You will gamble to stereo sound and retro graphics, and perhaps never go back to the modern glitz and glamour of slots like Mega Fortune or the bright neon colours of Butterfly Staxx.
